The Biscayne HealthCare Community™ has been operating in the Miami area for seventeen years under the name of The Biscayne Institutes of Health and Living, Inc. This model is rooted in a community system where many disciplines work together in support of the patient and each individual provider. At present these providers include health care psychologists and behavioral medicine specialists, licensed acupuncturists, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, art therapists and certified teachers. Allopathic and osteopathic physicians also provide services on site. The focus is on resources serving multiple purposes and an emphasis on wellness. We are health based, not illness based.
The structure of this model includes three major components: Rehabilitation for adults and children; a wellness and health promotion program; and an integrative primary care program. Emphasis is placed on wellness and quality of daily living as important cures and treatments for disease and disability. Numerous ancillary programs, including a specialized school for disabled children, a protective work environment, a training and research program, community outreach programs, volunteers and a non-profit 501(c)3 organization are all out growths of the basic HealthCare Community™ structure.
The Biscayne HealthCare Community™ has evolved various aspects of this structure since April 1988. Integrative primary care is currently the last part of the model that is being developed. All components of the model are financially based upon combined funding, including private insurance, out-of-pocket payments, workers’ compensation, Medicare, a Medicaid waiver program and, more recently, the Florida educational voucher program for seriously disabled children and youth. |
